Diosmin is a flavonoid that can be isolated from various plant sources, especially citrus, or derived from the flavonoid hesperidin. Diosmin is the major active constituent of Buchu leaf (Barosma betulina, Rutaceae) and is also found in other Rutaceae species.
Diosmin was introduced into Europe early in the 19th century as both a diuretic and urinary antiseptic.
Diosmin was first isolated in 1925 from Scrophularia nodosa, and was introduced in France in 1969 as a therapeutic agent.
Diosmin is widely prescribed in Western Europe for :
varicose veins, heavy legs, venous insufficiency, Premenstrual syndrome symptoms and hemorrhoid crisis.
